‘Planning a wedding? Sure, I can do that.’ From the moment you say ‘YES’ there will be all sorts of thoughts going through your mind. It can be exciting, nerve-wracking and stressful all at the same time. Most of all, it is going to be a day that is all about you (whether you like it or not) and so it is no surprise that you want to make sure you are in control of it as much as possible. There is a myth that people believe hiring a wedding planner is only for the super-rich, the ones that want nothing to do with their own wedding day and want to hand over all the control, but that just couldn’t be more wrong.
Baking and designing a wedding cake, or using calligraphy to hand letter all the invitation envelopes are probably not skills you have picked up in your years to date, which is why you will most likely hire someone to do it for you. But planning a wedding, that is just organising stuff… right? Back when I was newly engaged, these were certainly some of the thoughts going through my mind and so I was a victim just like you may be.
Planning a wedding is one of the most underestimated roles and unfortunately, it is only those that have done it before that realise what a responsibility it can be. Not only that, but it can be extremely time-consuming (somewhere between 200-400 hours in the average time spent) and stressful!
The majority of people who approach me and who are interested in hiring a wedding planner or designer are not newly engaged, they have attempted to start the planning themselves and occasionally they have made a pretty good job at it. But for many, it becomes too much and almost always they wish they had come to me sooner. The benefits of bringing on a planner or designer right from the outset are HUGE. Below I have listed some of the main things that a wedding planner can do for you:
DEFINE A DESIGN
A planner will define a wedding design and vision from the very start and ensure that all suppliers see it through to the very end so that there is a cohesive look and feel to your day. For me, the most important thing is that this design is completely unique to you and reflects all the things you love and who you are as a couple. Pinterest binging is a very common tendency for brides-to-be and it is great to have so many wonderful and creative ideas but sometimes it takes an expert to help you pull them all together into a cohesive look and feel.
SAVE THE PENNIES
Having an expert by your side when it comes to supplier negotiations and budget will allow you to make considerable savings so you can focus on what is the most important aspect of your big day. Suppliers are much more likely to cut a good deal with planners than they are with couples. At the end of the day the planners are the ones that they will hope to do business with again, but for you as a couple, hopefully, you will only be doing this just once.
TAKE THE WEIGHT OFF
Having a middle-man to manage all the suppliers and take away any stress from you will ensure that you can focus on all the fun stuff. I always make sure that as well as covering the nitty gritty, I am there as a constant source of reassurance, advice or just a sounding board when you need it.
I repeatedly hear that busy couples are returning home late from work each night and barely having enough time to cook dinner and squeeze in all the ‘wedmin’, not to mention actually being able to spend quality time together. The year or so that you spend being an engaged couple is a special one and you want to make sure that you can cherish each moment, not buried under overflowing email inboxes, paper samples and contracts.
COVER ALL GROUND
Wedding venues these days often come with in-house event coordinators, but their job is only to coordinate elements related to the venue. What about everything else? All the other details are what is going to make your day so special and your planner will leave no stone unturned. Your planner might also make you aware of things that you had never considered.
BAGS OF EXPERIENCE
For you, it is most likely the first time you have planned a wedding, but remember the planner has done it many times before. This experience will ensure they are able to recommend tried and tested suppliers, so you don’t need to worry about a supplier who is not going to deliver. Nowadays there are so many amazing suppliers out there but for a newbie, it can be a complete minefield trying to navigate the options and decide who will be best for you.
SAVE YOU TIME
One of the biggest benefits surely of hiring a wedding planner, it will save you between 200-400+ hours of wedding planning stress. That’s a lot of evenings and weekends taken up by admin. Busy lives mean you won’t have the resources to commit to planning every last detail, but you’ll still be able to make all the final decisions. Some couples worry that when handing the planning over to someone else, they are also losing control of their day. But this couldn’t be more wrong. When working with my couples, I will never take over on the decision-making and every recommendation that I make is all in the hope of creating a day that my couples will just love.
TAKE CHARGE ON THE DAY
The last thing you want on the actual day of the wedding is to be worrying about whether the band have arrived, what to do about the empty seats or the array of other dilemmas that will crop up on the day. Whether I have been booked in two years ahead of the big day or two weeks, I will always be 100% in control of all the logistics, coordination and styling on the day to ensure that you are happy, calm and that your wedding day is more magical and memorable than you could ever have imagined!
So does this all sound like something that you can take on and manage alongside your day job and all your other commitments. There is no shame in asking for a helping hand, and just like no one expects you to whip up your own wedding cake, no one is expecting you to pull off a meticulously organised and beautifully designed wedding when you have the leading role as the star of the show.
