Many of us have spent hours browsing through Pinterest, creating boards for the wedding of our dreams, all the details, the luxury. But it can often be so disheartening to hear that your dreams just aren’t realistic if you plan to stay within your budget… the dreaded ‘B’ word!
But just because you can’t have an entire flower wall of the season’s most luxurious blooms, or the chillout tipi full of exquisite linens and velvet lounge furniture, doesn’t mean that you can’t pick out some of the most important details and add elements of luxe and style in a thoughtful and understated way. It will not only save you money, but also time, and in the end you can still achieve those ever-so-stylish results.
So I am letting you in on some of my top wedding planner secrets here – my first three top hacks for achieving the most stylish of events in the simplest of ways.
As the great Christian Louboutin says ‘I would hate for someone to look at my shoes and say, “Oh my God! They look so comfortable!”’ He’s right ladies – the shoes are the best way of taking your bridal look to the next level. Go for a really simple, chic and flattering dress and team it up with a pair of killer heels. Whoever said we need to walk down the aisle in a pair of ivory, satin kittens?? It’s time to push the boundaries for what is ‘expected’ when it comes to bridal footwear. Here are some of my top picks. Life is too short for ugly shoes, after all!

CHOICE OF CHAIRS
Trade in the Chiavari and treat your backside. There is nothing worse than walking into a room full of colour-clashing hotel banquet chairs, or worse still, chairs that have been covered up with covers that don’t fit on ugly sashes.
Chairs are one of those things that can have a HUGE impact on the overall aesthetic of your event (they do take up rather a lot of space after all), so it really is worth getting it right. You may not have the budget to stretch to fancy tables, silk linens and luxury tableware, so if you are going to bring in one special something to your wedding reception, make it the chairs. Everything else is easily disguised (if needs be!)
My top choices for stylish chairs are The Cross Back, the Ghost, the Masters, the Tolix, the Louis, the Bistro.
Which to choose?
Depending on your wedding venue and the style of your event you should definitely find a chair that will fit with your design.
If you are going for a rustic, relaxed and romantic vibe and perhaps getting married in a garden, country house, barn or room with lots of wood or brick, then go with a Cross Back or Bistro Chair.
For a more modern and minimal event that is all about sleek design, the tolix, masters or ghost chairs could work perfectly for you. These will work really well for a city wedding or a more industrial space. The tolix chairs also come in a range of colours and metallic shades so can be a great way to add a little pizzazz!
If you are all about elegance and style that is sophisticated and luxurious, then the louis chair is the one for you. The seat pads can come in a range of colours, but my preference for that sense of understated luxury is to stick with classic white.

IT’S ALL IN THE LIGHT
A stylish event is not just about the aesthetics and what you can see, but also the atmosphere that you create and the way you make people feel. Sometimes it is difficult to get away from harsh and unflattering light at certain venues, but one bit of advice I have for you, even if you don’t have the budget for any flowers or decorative items: just flood the place in real candlelight. The soft glow of candlelight immediately creates a feeling of warmth, a feeling of an intimate yet special occasion, of elegance and romance, and can work just as well for summer as it can winter events.
Here are some of my favourite ways to incorporate candlelight into your wedding design for an incredibly simple and stylish effect.
