Your wedding will involve the making of many many choices, that’s for sure, and it might be that your stationery isn’t high on your list of priorities at the start. However, it’s a crucial part of your wedding both in terms of style and function, so I always urge my couples not to leave it as an afterthought. Your stationery can often end up being one of the key threads that draws all of your ideas, colours and themes together.
On the day itself, it creates impact on your tables with menus and place-cards, guides guests through the day with table plans and orders of service, and can add some whimsy or flare with bespoke hand-lettered signs and more. But perhaps even more importantly, the invitations you send your guests will give them the very first flavour of your wedding. It’ll inform, yes, but it will also pique their interest and build anticipation and excitement for the stylish and joy-filled celebration that you’ve got in store for them.
The good news is that there are a host of incredibly innovative and talented stationery designers out there to help you set the tone for your day in style. Here is a round up of some of my absolute favourites:
PALE PRESS LONDON
Run by the superbly talented Ashley Jones, Pale Press London is a design studio that specialises in modern calligraphy and illustrations in order to create unique stationery for a variety of events.
There’s something very clean and classic about Ashley’s designs, while the beautiful calligraphy gives a more personal touch to her ideas. The added twist is that no material is overlooked as a possible canvas for her work! She has produced calligraphy on a variety of papers, glass, stones and even on marble which looks so elegant and lavish. She also makes use of ribbons and ties and wax seals as well, for added texture and interest, and does it with great effect.
As well as invitations and save the dates, she also provides a wide array of ‘On the day’ stationery, such as table plans, place cards, menus and so on. Ashley prides herself on her unique displays, and I love the sophistication in each of her designs.
NAT’S PAPER STUDIO
Natalie has a graphic and web designer background which shows in her assured and distinctive stationery designs. Nat is extremely passionate about good design which, coupled with her love of typography and her fascination with paper, has created the perfect recipe for her bold and modern style as a stationer.
Nat offers a variety of beautiful customisable designs in her House Collection section, as well as offering bespoke design services for couples who want something one of a kind.
Her work is eye-catching and vividly full of drama, particularly with her use of metallics and bold typography featured on dark backgrounds. I especially love her use of vellum as a base material and not just as an overlay.
These are paper goods that pack a punch, and I can’t get enough of them!
OH WONDER CALLIGRAPHY
Lauren is something of a magician when it comes to calligraphy. Self taught, she’s now released a book on hand lettering, and the joy she takes in her exquisite penmanship is clear to see in her work. Her designs are highly tactile – using the finest inks and beautiful paper and card stock – and she also provides a variety of hand finishes to completely personalise your design, such as silk ribbons and twines. Whatever your vision, she will be able to produce stationery that at once complements and enhances the overall look of your day.
As well as stationery, Lauren also provides calligraphy on a number of ‘On the day’ items such as signage, chair hangings, fabric runners and wall hangings as well as table plans, place cards and practically anything else you can dream up. Each item is individually hand calligraphed in Lauren’s signature style which adds a real sense of occasion to her work. I particularly love the place names created out of gorgeous pieces of sea glass.
ROSEWOOD CO
Rosewood Co is the creation of Megan Rose, a designer and illustrator with a passion for paper. The attention to detail and sheer amount of heart that she pours into each individual piece in her portfolio is just one of the many reasons she’s made this list!
Her work is fresh, clean and romantic, and the hand-drawn and painted illustrations really give a sense of artistic beauty to all of her designs. I particularly love the way she mixes traditional design ideas with more contemporary splashes, such as water colouring and gold foiling, to great effect.
These are just a few of my recommended designers. It’s a rich and vibrant world out there and there are a wealth of talented and artistic people who can bring some real flair to your wedding stationery. I love to pair my couples up with designers who match their personalities perfectly, and I’ll work closely with you and with the designers to ensure that every last detail is finessed and fabulous.
